TIL Tuesday: Things In My Mailbox Edition

I haven’t done a TIL Tuesday (Things I Love Tuesday) post in awhile – and that’s a shame because it’s probably way more fun than reading about all of the things that are currently freaking me out or me griping about the weather. I’ve gotten some fun stuff in my mailbox lately so let me tell you a few things that I’ve gotten that I adore.

Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique – Protect
This came in January’s Birchbox. Birchbox remains one of my random splurges these days – my house may be freezing but I’ll spend ten bucks a month to get a box of fun things in the mail. The Keratase is an awesome heat protecting styling product that does some awesome mojo when I straighten my hair (it makes no discernible difference when heat styling products aren’t used – at least for me). But I’ve used this twice now when straightening my hair and the end result is softer and shinier hair with less frizz. It also makes the ends look healthier. So full of win.

Actually, I love Birchbox in general. While I don’t love every product (perfume samples? Mehhhhhh…), I do love the fun of opening each month and trying things I wouldn’t try otherwise. I’ve found some amazing things that someday I’ll actually purchase. Probably.

When My Baby Dreams of Fairy Tales

I remember seeing the blog – the mom who made these amazing scenes every afternoon while her baby girl was napping. I know neither of my daughters would have ever slept through that, but the blog was lovely and now the images have been made into a book. I received a review copy today. My daughters love it, the photographs are lovely and I think it will make an excellent baby shower gift.

Fancy Nancy: Nancy Clancy, Secret Admirer

I know this may seem ridiculous but I am kinda glad to see they have Fancy Nancy growing up a little for her readers that are getting better at reading. It was one of my favorite series for Pumpkin and I was bummed to see her outgrow the series. Now we can hang on to this fun series a little longer.

Thursday Ten: This Is Only Sort of About Hair edition

I apologize for the formatting but i am too lazy to fix it. I wrote this elsewhere, copied and pasted here and bleh. Ugh. Let’s all pretend I did it on purpose because I super love white space.

1. I am wearing my hair in a braid today. There’s nothing about this “style” (to call it such is a tremendous overstatement) that looks remotely good, it’s just… I didn’t feel like straightening my hair and I was out of frizz-fighting product. If I could have shoved a baseball hat on my head before walking out the door, I’d have done that instead.

2. I didn’t want to straighten my hair because the split ends are winning. My hairstylist left/got fired/fell off the planet and I have an appointment for a trim on Saturday. I’m very very nervous. I’d avoid going at all if I could – oh the power a scissor-wielding stylist has to really mess up your appearance and your self esteem – but… the split ends. There’s so many of them. The dry weather and the heat of a straightening iron don’t help. So, hobo braid. Meh.

3. I really, really miss my daughters. They come home tomorrow.

4. For those curious about how my grandpa is doing… he and my grandmother have moved into an assisted living facility and so far they really seem to like it. I was tremendously relieved to find that my grandpa had accepted so easily the fact that he and my grandma wouldn’t be able to live on their own. This place seems like a good place for them. It’s a relief.

5. Some people choose a “word of the year” – this year I chose two words: SEEK JOY. And let me tell you, I’m not sure that I’m any good at it, but I’m going to try. Why wouldn’t one opt for happiness if given the choice, right?

068 | 365

6. I don’t make resolutions with the new year, but I am going to make an effort to get back on track with being healthier. I’m getting older and my metabolism isn’t what it used to be and blah blah blah… but also, life stress in 2012 followed by getting happier coupled with a lack of free time all kinda did a number on me. Happy is good, buying bigger pants is not. Do not look for me to cut tacos out of my life. Not gonna happen.

7. With a gift card I received for Christmas, I picked up two new books yesterday.
May We Be Forgiven
The Great Night
What are you reading now? (I haven’t been to book club in MONTHS.)

8. I am completely sucked in to the show “Breaking Bad.” I’ve just about wrapped up season two on Netflix and WHOA. The downside is that I’m so sucked in that I keep watching episode after episode because I want to see what happens next. (Sleep, whut?)

9. I know that winter is cold. I know that it could be much colder. I AM SO TIRED OF BEING COLD.

10. Over the weekend, I saw “Silver Lining Playbook.” Was it as good as I had anticipated? Um…no. But I did like it. And I like Bradley Cooper as a non-Hangover-goofball. And I liked Jennifer Lawrence (this was my first time seeing her in anything). Have you seen any movies over the holidays? (Django is next on my list. Then Les Mis. And then the movie about fracking that I’m going to see because Matt Damon is in it.)

Day 5: Great New Children’s Books Just in Time for the Holidays

Admittedly, one of my favorite things about being a blogger is occasionally getting the opportunity to review things that are actually relevant for me and my children. That I have been getting so many amazing children’s books in the mail to check out lately has been a joy – because I have never stopped loving children’s books – and frankly they’re the only kind of books I have found time for lately.

The girls and I have a method for book reviews – I read through everything first… then? I let them check out the books. This list of our favorites was made by the three of us after going through an amazingly plentiful pile of books received in the past several months. The other books? For the most part – still pretty amazing. These, however, are our favorites.

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: As Retold by Mo Willems

If you have kids and you haven’t discovered the wonder that is Mo Willems then get thee to your bookstore or library (or Amazon!) pronto. I dig his style – from Snufflebunny to the Pigeon series. This retelling of the Goldilocks story did NOT disappoint. Instead of visiting the house of three bears, Goldilocks trespasses into the home of three dinosaurs. Hilarity ensues. It’s a good one and the girls and I giggle every time we read it. The book is recommended “For Dinosaur Ages Triassic to Jurassic” – both of my daughters love it, and I do too – so you be the judge.

Charlie and the Christmas Kitty

Y’all are familiar with The Pioneer Woman, right? Well, Ree Drummond is now writing kid’s books, including this one that stole Pumpkin’s heart – probably because it’s about a dog. This book spurred a discussion with my mom’s husband about kid lit and the power illustrations have to make or break a good book. While the story here isn’t particularly special (in my opinion – my daughter would argue otherwise), the illustrations are warm and really steal the show. For the animal loving kid in your life, this is a fun addition to their library.

Fancy Nancy: The Wonderful World of Fancy Nancy

Okay, remember when I just said that illustrations could make or break a children’s book? The Fancy Nancy series is one that I really believe could stand alone on its merits story-wise, but the illustrations, the bright colors and the fun font used for the story all just make it even better. Nancy is a little girl who likes to be “fancy” and this box set contains four books from the Fancy Nancy series (our set is paperback). Not only are the stories fun, but Nancy is genuinely likeable and the “fancy” vocabulary your kids will pick up along the way make these darling books a real treat to read with your kids.

My Brave Year of Firsts: Tries, Sighs, and High Fives

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about Jamie Lee Curtis as an author but she keeps writing books and people keep buying them and I can almost forgive her for being in those weird yogurt commercials (sorry about your digestive system, Jamie Lee). This book is fun and bright and the rhyming is cute and fun and easy to read. Overall, it’s pretty relatable for kids – even down to the first time you laugh so hard milk comes out of your nose (that HURTS, y’all). This sweet book is a lovely reminder to parents about all of those firsts we may have forgotten – first time walking around the block, anyone? (The kids will dig it too.)

These books were review copies and sent for review purposes but my opinion and that of my kiddos is solely our own. AND BOY DO WE HAVE OPINIONS.

Thursday Ten: Need A New Routine edition

1. I thought that the return of school would also bring a sense of calm and routine but what I’m finding is that no. Not so much. Gymnastics eats a good chunk of the schedule after school during the week. It’s chaotic and hopefully we’ll settle in just in time for the holidays to start and the snow to fly.

2. Among the many posts I’ve seen in recent days, one of the things I’ve loved the most is having been introduced to Brandi Carlile’s “That Wasn’t Me”: do i make myself a blessing to everyone i meet?

3. Around Grand Rapids, artists are getting ready for ArtPrize and I couldn’t be happier. I am not the biggest fan of West Michigan (sorry, but I’m not) but ArtPrize makes me love it a little bit. I love the vibe of the town when it’s filled with art and people are talking about what they’re seeing and the streets are full of people (okay, that part annoys me a bit).  I’m ready to see what is in store this year. BRING ON THE ART.

4. The Princess tried to stump me with a fifth grade social studies question last night but AHA AMERIGO VESPUCCI. Can’t fool me with your homework, kid. (Okay, maybe the math)

5. There’s a certain glow the sun has when it’s rising in the morning. I kind of love it. I pulled over on my way to work to get this shot – and one of these days, on the weekend when I’m in no hurry and I’m awake insanely early for no apparent reason, I’m going to go out and shoot more.
there's a bright golden haze on the meadow

6. I make no secret about not loving summer but you know what one of the perks is of the days getting shorter? Catching a sunrise on the way to work, and soon, catching the sunset. Yeah, I hate to drive to and from work in the dark – but my porch doesn’t offer the best view of a sunrise OR sunset (Stupid houses and trees). When I’m driving, the views are amazing.

7. I am using my netbook to type this. My laptop was making some awful groan-y noises last night while I was editing photos and I know it’s a matter of needing to back up some photos and get them OFF my laptop (also, MEMORY)… That laptop is ollllld and it’s been a pain in the ass for awhile. If it was Old Yeller, I’d have taken it out back and put it out of its misery by now.

8. I finished reading Gone Girl this week for book club. OH MY GOSH. This book and The Fault in Our Stars are two of the best I’ve read in awhile. Gone Girl was suspenseful and well-written and just when I thought I knew what was coming next I was always way wrong (in the best way – it’s the worst when you can anticipate every plot turn!). The Fault In Our Stars is a young adult book but a well crafted one, and one that left me (and the two people I’ve loaned it to since) in tears.

9. I have not yet decided what I’ll be cooking up for Kitchen Through The Lens next week but want to be sure I thank those of you who are following the process and who are sharing those posts. My friend, Rachel (who is far better in the kitchen than I could hope to be) gave me an awesome shout out on her blog the other day, and I’m just glad that any one is along for this ride with me. So… thanks. And welcome. (Savory biscotti next week, maybe?)

10. Good morning, happy Thursday. Let’s go make this day magical, shall we? Have a good one!

Thursday Ten: Last Week of Summer edition

1. Met the girls’ teachers yesterday and… I really think it’s gonna be a good year. The Princess needs a teacher who isn’t afraid to be tough and challenge her students and WHOA, I think she may have that teacher. And Pumpkin’s teacher? She seems to have a great sense of humor which I think will work well with Pumpkin’s personality. Just a few more days til school starts. BRING IT.

2. Two more days of my 365 – TWO! And then year four will be over. Am I doing a fifth year? Yeppers. Join me if you want. Can’t wait to see what you come up with. (Hell, I can’t wait to see what I come up with!)

3. Know what makes me inordinately happy? Pretty cappuccino art. Coffee. Coffee houses. Cups of coffee. Coffee with friends. Talking over coffee. Pretty coffee. Yeah.
356 | 365

4. Adults behaving badly – it gets old – heard second hand of someone getting her knickers in a twist because she wasn’t invited to a bridal shower. Let’s see: The bride you barely know didn’t invite you to celebrate her impending nuptials with her FAMILY and CLOSEST FRIENDS and you are upset? Just sit down, shush up and enjoy your free afternoon and the extra thirty bucks you didn’t spend on towels at Bed Bath & Beyond.

5. Election season must have been so much more pleasant back before the internet.

6. In book club this month we’re reading Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl – I’m not too far into it, but I’m not exaggerating when I say that it might be the one of the most well-written books I’ve picked up in awhile. The last two books I’ve tried to read, I’ve set aside, unfinished – with no intent to return to them. This one seems to be a good one, though.

7. Pumpkin has taken to asking for another dog. A smaller dog. One who will cuddle with her. I think she had these visions of our pup – he was so tiny at first – but he grew, OH DID HE GROW. But no new puppies for us… I cannot even imagine where the time to housetrain a puppy would come from and I can’t afford to replace all the carpet. Sorry kiddo. No go.

8. The advantage to keeping a container of cookie dough (homemade, of course) in the fridge is making just one cookie to tide a sweet tooth craving and hold you over. The disadvantage is knowing there’s still a container in the fridge and really? JUST ONE? GO MAKE ANOTHER ONE.

9. New music this week – some stuff from the Fleetwood Mac tribute album, The Best Coast covering Rhiannon.

10. I didn’t need a reminder – but cancer? It sucks. Heart is heavy and hurting and I feel helpless and I am committed to keep doing what little bit I can – whether it’s walking in the Avon Walks or talking about cancer or posting links on early detection or talking about cookies in relation to my bake sales to raise funds for my walks. This is probably another post for another day, or many more posts for many more days. As many as it takes. (And Julie, I’m rooting for you)

Thursday Ten: Grateful Cancellations Edition

1. My book club was cancelled last night. I had, uh, actually decided to skip it before they cancelled it but then someone’s kid(s) got sick and so the whole shebang was off and so I was no longer an antisocial canceler and instead just like everyone else. If, by chance, you’re in my book club and you’re reading this – it wasn’t y’all. I just didn’t feel like being social. Or making a dish to pass. I’ll be better next time around. Probably.

2. So instead of book club, I went to Sephora because I had a gift card. Now that was fun. It also only took five minutes.

3. I am officially burned out on Olympics.

4. On Saturday, I had the opportunity to assist shooting a wedding. The experience deserves its own post, surely. As someone who doesn’t usually shoot weddings, it was definitely a learning experience and one that was a tremendous shake to my confidence, and since I’ve returned from it, I’ve been slower to pick up my camera. And maybe that’s okay – because the thing is, it’s okay to realize I have things to learn. I’ll learn them. And that is kind of a scary realization. I’d like to get a bit of my faith back, though.
339 | 365

5. Lately, I stay up too late. Good thing I bought concealer at Sephora. If you can’t sleep, you can buy sleep in a bottle. A little under-eye concealer and suddenly, voila, well rested.

6. In new music, I downloaded Missy Higgins’s new album and iTunes promptly ate half of it. Because iTunes is broken in stupid ways. And none of their remedies have fixed it. SOOOOO I will be doing my music buying from Amazon (and then I’ll be a jerk and link everything here with affiliate links because I can and if you’re going to buy it anyway, might as well use an affiliate link, right?) Anyway, Missy is especially moody lately and it’s all fine.

7. I am having a ridiculous amount of fun with my Kitchen through the Lens project. Mission accomplished. I have many weeks to go, but it’s nice knowing that once a week, I’m trying something new and often  delicious and I’m kind of glad I started it. I will try not to strain my arm patting myself on the back.

8. My house feels empty when my daughters aren’t in it.

9. This is the time of year when Facebook fills up with people sending their kids off to school and here in Michigan we have nearly another month until kids go back to school. It’s the law, y’all. No school until after Labor Day.

10. Sometimes you need, for no good reason, to end a post with baby piggies. You’re welcome.

Thursday Ten: I AM A GIANT edition

1. I am typing this edition of the Thursday Ten on a netbook. I never ever use my netbook – mostly because I have huge gigantic manhands but here I am, using the netbook and I feel like a giant using this tiny mini little bitty thing.

2. What IS it that Java is always wanting to update? DAILY, y’all. What does it change daily?

3. I feel tremendously old, tired and run down this week – and I feel like it shows. I feel like my eyes are weary and heavy and that I have aged a hundred years in the past week and a half. Certainly that can’t be true, but am grateful for filters in Lightroom.
see you seeing me

4. Seven years ago today I was really sick of being pregnant. Tomorrow is the Pumpkin’s birthday and I’m gearing up for her birthday festivities. This may be a more low key year than most, but I am still very very excited to celebrate the day she was born. I love birthdays – especially the birthdays of my kiddos.

5. There was an amazing show in the sky the other morning – I love the colors and how beautiful the sky can be. Surely, my neighbors are used to me standing in the driveway in my pajamas with my camera taking pictures of the sunrise.
328 | 365

6. I got invited to an event via Facebook the other day by a woman I went to high school with. I had actually just walked past her in a public place last week – neither one of us said hi to each other (and we’re “friends” on Facebook why?). It’s a weird thing, Facebook. And it’s a weird choice of terminology… “friends”. Anyway, totally not going to her Tupperware party or whatever it is.

7. I’m having fun with my Kitchen Through the Lens project so far. I think I’m going to have to give myself more time for the next project. I come home after work and get busy trying to make SOMETHING, and I feel like I am rushed and just want to HURRY HURRY HURRY and finish so I can eat. And that kind of defeats the second half of the project which is to really work on the photography side of things. I need to sloooooow down. I’ve yet to decide what to make next week. What do you think I should make?

8. New music this week? Not much. Tristan Prettyman’s new single “My Oh My” was released so I picked that up. I like her – she’s mellow and acoustic-y and generally pretty positive and so while this isn’t my favorite TP song, I do like it.

9. Tonight, I bake a cake. A doughnut cake. My legendary cake. I’m kind of looking forward to that. Mostly because cake sounds really good right now. As does cake batter.

10. The Princess and I have been re-reading children’s stories at bedtime – older books, books far under her reading level. We started earlier in the week reading “Goodnight Moon” together and we followed the next night with “Harold and the Purple Crayon”. It makes me smile, revisiting these books with her. She hasn’t wanted to be read to in so long. The stories we’re reading are fun, and revisiting them is a fun little regression. I still love children’s books – so I hope she hangs on to that also.

“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.”

Last night on Twitter is when I first started seeing quite a lot of Nora Ephron quotes posted. You spend enough time on social media, you realize that when someone who isn’t talked about much is suddenly talked about excessively, they’ve either gone to jail for doing something really bizarre… or they’ve died.

I kind of wish Nora Ephron had just done something really bizarre.

Waiter, there is too much pepper on my paprikash.

The writer of some of my favorite books and movies has passed away and while clearly I never knew her personally, I feel a loss in a way. Her characters, particularly the women, were easy to relate to (Sally, perhaps a little too much so) and were real. She had an uncanny knack for writing dialogue, and it was distinctive. Whether you’re watching “When Harry Met Sally” or “You’ve Got Mail” or “Sleepless in Seattle”… or whatever… you could peg that dialogue as Ephron dialogue. In a world where so many writers are trying to be someone else, to have a voice of your own that was both recognizable and yet accessible enough for so many to relate to is a rare and wonderful gift. Were her films award-winning caliber? Um, probably not. But you can’t deny the fun, light-hearted spirit.

You’re the worst kind: You’re high maintenance but you think you’re low maintenance.

I find that I’ve always known countless more women than men who have a near rabid love for “When Harry Met Sally” – it’s been one of my favorites for years. I loved the friendship between Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, loved the evolution of their relationship from the time they first met in Chicago to his “I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out” speech. That the movie is infinitely quotable was because of Ephron’s writing and her gift for creating characters that the viewers couldn’t help but love, even despite their flaws.

Oh but “Baby Fish Mouth” is sweeping the nation? I hear them talking.

I’ve found that in reading Ephron’s books, as well as seeing her movies, bits and pieces from various stories worked their ways into different pieces of work. The “two neuroses knowing they’re a perfect match” quote from Sleepless in Seattle? That was originally written in the novel, Heartburn, which was made into a movie in the late 80s and only real asset really was that Carly Simon “Coming Around Again” song which I still love because it reminds me of my childhood and my dad’s wife playing Carly and singing along and oh, that whole album conjures up memories. There was a syndicated columnist in Heartburn as well who I’m guessing shaped Greg Kinnear’s role in You’ve Got Mail (I could be wrong. I’m too tired to analyze).

Sometimes I wonder about my life. I lead a small life – well, valuable but small – and sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven’t been brave?

I found myself, this morning, almost wishing that it had been Delia Ephron who had passed away instead and then I felt immediately awful because poor Delia’s only offense is that she never has written as well as her sister (Her latest novel sits on my kitchen counter, I’m about a third of the way through – and while I feel it was written as though she could envision making it into a movie, it feels like she wanted it to be somewhat of a female “Hangover”, but didn’t know how to execute it, so there’s a lion who sits in the middle of the bar who will never measure up to Mike Tyson’s lion in Hangover). The novel “Hanging Up” was decent, but unlike Nora’s stories, didn’t translate well to the screen and instead ended up being some weird mishmash with (of course) Meg Ryan, Lisa Kudrow, and a third person who I can’t even remember and am too lazy to look up on IMDB. Had it been Delia, I’m not sure I’d have been as sad.

I suck as a human.

I have made a lot of mistakes falling in love, and regretted most of them, but never the potatoes that went with them.

So, cheers to you Nora, wherever you may be. Thank you for the words and the entertainment and the memory and the characters that you created. They’ve embedded themselves in pop culture history, and more importantly, my goofy little heart.

Thursday Ten: Can’t Think Of A Witty Title edition

1. As I type, I’m listening to Usher’s latest album – one of two that have been filling my ears this week. The second is the new release from Grace Potter and the Nocturnals – that one I’m still undecided about. Loved the first single, “Stars”, but at first listen, I’m not sure I love the feel of  this effort (“The Lion The Beast and The Beat”). It may take a few more listens.

2. I took this shot (this is sooc) outside of the Gerald Ford Museum in Grand Rapids. I love these flowers – all the bright orange lighting up my surroundings makes me smile. These are my two favorite colors right here. Sometimes mother nature has the best color palette.
292 | 365

3. In book club, no one had read the book so, we didn’t talk about it at all. Yeah, that means we talked about the book five less minutes than usual. It’s not so much about the book anyway – though we all (usually) read it anyway. The conversation is often interesting – and right now, since most of us have daughters around the same age, we spent a lot of time talking about tampons and puberty and having “the talk”. Fun times. (Hilarious. ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY HILARIOUS)

4. In the midst of life being…life… I have managed to continue to make time to keep capturing moments and life with my camera. It’s more difficult than I thought to get creative with images when I’m in the office most days. But it’s an effort that makes me happy when I manage to get a shot I love. I’m also still managing to do some fun portrait photography and that makes me tremendously happy.

5. Pumpkin has taken an interest in baking (sound familiar?). How am I ever gonna keep fitting into my clothes if both my kids are bakers?

6. I am forever grateful that I have been blessed with such amazing friends in my life. It’s a gift and I’m constantly amazed at the caliber of friendships I have, the people in my life. Even the comments on my moody post the other day lifted me so much – and that makes me smile. Sometimes (okay, lots of times) it makes me crazy that my friends are so far flung all over the world. I’d love to have ’em all here for awhile.

7. Whoa.
Whoa.

8. I had a substitute dental hygienist at my six month cleaning last week and the experience was every bit as gruesome as the words “substitute dental hygienist” might indicate. Thank god I am not one of those who is fearful of the dentist, because that would NOT have helped.

9. After a whole school year of somehow not knowing that Pumpkin had a classmate LIVING ON OUR STREET, we discovered at the end of the school year that yes! There’s another kid her age in the neighborhood. She and I wandered down the street the other day and she got to slip and slide with some of the kiddos and I spent a bit of time getting to know the moms. One of the women has lived on our street just as long as we have – and yet we’ve never met. I’ve lived in this house ten years if that gives you any indication of what an antisocial introvert I am. Very nice peeps, and the kids all had fun. Win.

10. I shouldn’t have cut my hair last month. It was just a few inches and no one noticed but me, but I really want my long hair back. It helps in the summer to weigh down ALL THE HUMIDITY FLUFF. I am grateful that there are so many frizz control products, but sometimes even the best of the best can’t fight Michigan’s humid weather. It’s about time for a ponytail.

Thursday Ten: Some Days Are Like That Even In Australia edition

1. Do y’all remember Alexander and his horrible, terrible no-good very bad day? It was a kids’ book (well… still is) and it was one of my favorites when I was younger. And you know, what it all boils down to in the end is that some days ARE like that – gum in the hair, can’t find your favorite jammies, not getting the prize out of the cereal box, not getting the window seat. Though it evolves and the scale and scope is different as you age, some days (weeks, months…) are just… like that sometimes. Even in Australia.

2. Tomorrow is the last day of school for the kiddos – and then I’ll have a second and fifth grader. They have both grown and changed and learned so much this year. I’m bummed that I’ll be missing so much of their summer, but, I think we’ll manage.

3. This week is the “give it to every single food craving you absolutely have because why not” (and because some days are like that, even in Australia). Burger and onion ring craving? Check. Tacos? Check. Peanut butter cups for breakfast? Check (And check. And, uh… check). I don’t normally eat this way and I’m not really planning to stay on this path – mostly because it just feels gross to eat so much garbage. BUT MY GOD IT IS SO YUMMY.

4. One of the most fun things about keeping a 365 photo project is getting to look back at where I was on this day, however many years ago. This is year four, so… I can look back a few years. On this day two years ago, I was on one of the most fun blogging trips ever – to Cincinnati to Proctor & Gamble for the Fabric Care University where I met Tim Gunn. A lot of cool things have come my way because of blogging – that’s been one of my favorite moments. Still. Even two years later. (Though I still think that it was a mistake to move Project Runway to Lifetime and it was better – way better – when it was on Bravo. Also, I think Mondo should have won his season.)

5. The Princess just kicked off summer practices for a new season of gymnastics and she’d been hoping to get to use a Nicki Minaj song for her floor routine. Instead… we’ll have a whole year of “Pumped Up Kicks.” Can you sense my excitement? (Ugh)

6. And speaking of music… I made it up until last week before hearing “Call Me Maybe”. I admit, I just don’t listen to the radio much – but the girls and I listened to the radio to and from Chicago last Sunday – and heard the song a few times. And then promptly got it stuck in my head.

7. I haven’t been doing a whole lot of reading lately – between life stuff and photo editing stuff – but when I do read, lately I’ve been catching a few pages of “Coraline” by Neil Gaiman to make sure it’s not too creepy for The Princess first before passing it on.

8. Did I just say photo-editing? This little dude was just over a week old when I photographed him last week. So precious. (But so tiring – newborns? So unpredictable and you take what you can get and try for some good shots. I was frustrated during the shoot – but am pretty pleased with the results overall)
before they're all ruined by walking and smells and stuff

9. Speaking of babies, I’ll be watching my niece Saturday when I take her to a family bridal shower my sister is unable to attend. How excited am I? I did have to promise my sister I wouldn’t let strange people hold her baby and that I wouldn’t put the baby on the floor of the hall. But… I think I’ll easily be able to hold up my end of the deal. Can’t wait. (I’m a pretty awesome aunt, just so you know)

10. In preparation for this bridal shower, I will spend extensive amounts of time tomorrow making massive quantities of bruschetta. I sure do hate cooking, but my bruschetta is legendary. I kind of look forward to the smell of fresh basil in the kitchen. Oooh, and garlic.
