I Got Love For You

There is shredded mozzarella cheese on the living room floor. Miley Cyrus (or is it Hannah?) blaring on the cd player in the kitchen, Pumpkin has been running around in her underwear since her naptime and I haven’t been able to get her dressed, and The Princess has what appears to be a big mud splash on her off white pants. Lovely.

I only briefly made it out of the house this morning – to pick up a donut for Pumpkin who has been sleeping so beautifully all the way through the night (oh, if I could only say the same for myself!) and to pick up some coffee for moi. Work, writing projects, extra hooey and I feel just like blah.
And the bad thing is that some days, this 365 picture day serves only to remind me that I haven’t done a whole lot of any significance in my day. And then I realize that I’m wrong. Today, I read stories. Made lunches. Brushed hair. Sang songs. I scrubbed Sharpie off Pumpkin’s hands (aw yeah). I poured juice. I brainstormed with The Princess to determine our meeting spot should our house catch on fire (thank you fire safety week). But most of all, I gave my kids lots of hugs and love. And so when I started trying to figure out how I would define my day in pictures, The Princess finger-spelled LOVE in sign language, and I funkdified it up with random tints. Though I ended up using a picture of Pumpkin’s Sharpie hands, it was a good reminder that my days and the things I do are part of the bigger picture, even if I don’t always see it.

Hey! Another Friday Fill In

You can find Friday Fill Ins here. My answers are gonna be in….BRIGHT GREEN.
NOTE: Wow, bright green is very hard to read but I’m too lazy to change it.

1. Right now, I’m feeling really tired. I slept horribly last night and I can’t even blame my kids. I woke up several times. I hate that.

2. Not sure where it is where I want to be. I suppose I’m fine where I am, but I think I’m ready for a weekend away from little people. And Fantasy Football.

3. How does one get good at taking the time for themselves that they need without feeling guilty about it?

4. My to-do list, calendar and iPhone calendar keep me on track. I can be pretty task oriented – it helps to see what I’ve done and what I’ve yet to do.

5. Please don’t do the passive aggressive thing. I really don’t like that.

6. My children fill me with joy.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to absolutely nothing, tomorrow my plans include watching the Michigan/Michigan State Game and Sunday, I want to do something by myself!

Thursday Ten: It’s Because of the Arpeggios Edition

1. Guitar lessons continue to go alright – today, I learned “We Three Kings” (which I can now add to my holiday music arsenal, along with “O Holy Night” and “Silent Night”). I also learned the first bit of “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” – because my teacher was trying to teach me about arpeggios. Yes, I have heard of Blue Oyster Cult. No, I probably wouldn’t know the song if I got it in “Name that Tune”. Next week, she says she’ll teach me parts of “Taylor” by Jack Johnson, which makes me very happy because I love Jack Johnson.

2. Cheetos? They are good. I love Cheetos. Every Thursday, I manage to forget to eat lunch before I go to guitar lesson, so when I got home today I was starving. I cracked open some Cheetos. I was chatting with a girlfriend of mine, telling her my keyboard was now covered with artificial cheese – she replied: “Cheetos: ur doing it right.” We decided that Cheetos were like cheesy, orange crack – which under most circumstances we all agree would be bad. When it comes to Cheetos, though, we make an exception.

3. This weekend is the Michigan/Michigan State football game. GOOOO BLUE. (However, I am not terribly optimistic).

4. I got another HUGE pile of magazines in the mail today. I’m not even caught up from the last round. Today’s mail included another copy of Cookie magazine (which I would NEVER pay for, by the way – it was a free subscription and I don’t love the magazine), Rolling Stone, Good Housekeeping and Health. I love magazines.

5. It’s my mom’s boss’s birthday tomorrow and he’s on some diet plan that allows very few sweets but apparently gives the thumbs up to rice crispy treats. My mother, however, is “baked goods” inept (I hesitate to use the term baked goods, because I hardly would put the rice crispy treat in that category). She actually asked me to make them for her. This is why I know how to bake. As soon as I could read, my mom had me take over the baking projects. This morning she dropped off marshmallows and rice crispies and tomorrow she’ll pick them up on her way to work. Like I’m the freakin’ snack drive through.

6. The Princess came home today and told me a mean boy in her class gave her a piece of paper today with the words “Poop you” written on it (Kids. What the hell are they thinking?). I asked if she showed the teacher. “No, mom,” she said, “but I recycled it.” That’s my girl.

7. New music this week: LOTS. Some of it isn’t so “new”, but new to my collection anyway. “3×5” John Mayer; “U Want Me 2” Sarah McLachlan; “Bad Girlfriend” Theory of a Deadman; “A Sorta Fairytale” Tori Amos; “Bizarre Love Triangle” New Order; aaaaaaaand “Miss Independent” (not Kelly Clarkson) Ne-Yo. Why yes, I’m working on a birthday iTunes gift card.

8. I miss Project Runway.

9. Pumpkin is doing much better with her sleeping… and if she sleeps through tonight, I’m taking her out for donuts for breakfast tomorrow. Bribery – I never thought I’d be that kind of parent but when it comes to me getting my sleep, it’s totally worth it because I need my sleep.

10. Soooo, “High School Musical 3” – how many people getting suckered into taking their kids this weekend?

But I Did It Anyway

So, I told y’all that I am not the volunteer in the class kind of mom, but I did it today. I went in after dropping Pumpkin off at daycare (and getting coffee). I stayed just over an hour. In that hour I obseved several things:

a) My kid is crazy smart
b) The parents with no landlines and cell phones only? Their kids have a harder time learning their phone numbers. Sounds crazy – but I had to work with kids seeing if they knew their digits and CONSISTENTLY cell-only kids did NOT.
c) The teacher moved The Princess so she now sits next to my ex-boyfriend’s daughter. Whee.

Along that vein, The Princess came home this afternoon with her little address book with the daughter’s name, phone number and address. Can’t wait til THAT playdate. I think I’ll be gone that day.

Later tonight, we had parent-teacher conferences and that went unbelievably well. Apparently, The Princess is topped out on reading levels – she’s reading at level 20+ (they won’t test beyond that, but say that she’s at least on second grade level). Most of the kids in her class are around levels 5 – 8.

Teacher said my daughter is creative, mature, empathetic and a good friend to her classmates. All of that made me feel great because those are all things she got from me. See, one of the things people often say about her is that she looks just like Hubby. And she does. Granted, he’s not blonde anymore, but when he was a kid, he was blonde just like she is. They have similar features. I’ve had people ask if I was a part of her genetic makeup at all (I’m just a recessive gene pool, appearance wise, I guess). From the looks perspective, probably not. But all the inside stuff – the writing, the reading, the creativity and how she relates to people? I hate to get conceited, but, that stuff comes from me. It felt good to hear that.

Granted, she seems to be excelling at everything. That worries me – Hubby and I both had such an easy time right through high school – college was a bit of a reality check, though. Weird as it sounds, I would rather she had a few tough times here and there where she learned to work through things and figure things out rather than sail smoothly until her freshman year of college and have it all smack her upside the head.

I’m off the hook for volunteering for another two weeks.

So, It’s Been Fifty Days (And Other Hooey)

Today is day 50 of the Envisage 365 project (Y’all see that link to the right – you can click on it). I can’t believe it’s been 50 days already, and that I haven’t missed a day yet. I’m keeping my images in a few different places – the E365 blog, my Facebook, and Flickr. So many of the women involved in this project are amazing photographers – me? Not so much. But it’s been cool trying to define my day with a picture and already checking out the pictures from the past fifty days and remembering the past month and a half-ish.
***
In other drama, Pumpkin has taken to waking up each night at 3:30 a.m. and she doesn’t appear to really need anything: sometimes a diaper change (she wears a diaper or pull up at bed) and to be covered up with a blanket so she can go back to bed. HOW DO I MAKE HER STOP? Seriously, getting up at 3:30 a.m. means that I’m often awake for at least an hour following that. She isn’t teething. She doesn’t seem to be sick. It’s just DRIVING ME NUTS. So, if you have kids that sleep and like sleep, can you please tell me how you made that happen?

If A Picture Speaks 1,000 Words

So, Thursday morning after I dropped Pumpkin off at daycare, I was hustling home to get to the house before the mom-who-doesn’t-feed-children-on-playdates came over to try to sell me stuff and I saw a hot air balloon. This isn’t uncommon. There are balloons out all the time at this time of year. It is unusual for me to drive right under one, so that when I look up, I can see the flame dealy-bob. But cool.

Friday Fill In, 10/17/08

To start out with a bit of fluff…. A Friday Fill In.

My answers are purple!

1. Follow the yellow brick road.

2. A camera is something I always take with me on vacation (but really? Vacation? What vacation? The last trip I went on was in April. Been far too long. FAAAAR too long).

3. To achieve your goals, you must do SOMETHING.

4. I’m the Queen of Awesome is something I’d like you to know about me.

5. I have a lot of really great friends.

6. Hope floats. Cheesy movie by the way. Very cheesy.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to nothing, tomorrow my plans include taking the kids to swim class, and Sunday I want to finally get Halloween costumes for the kids.

Thursday Ten, It’s MY BIRTHDAY Edition

1. Thank you so much to my BFF who took me to Coldstone for lunch where I had a “For Coffee Lovers Only” (but of course) – coffee ice cream, almonds, Heath bar pieces, and I think caramel. Soooo good. She also gifted me with a bag of Tootsie Pops and a super cool whatchamacallit that says “Believe” for my office. My sis has it tattooed to her arm – for me, I prefer the desk decoration. Very thoughtful, very cool. She ALSO (because she is truly awesome) made a collage for her 365 pics that’s all pics of me. Holy crap. That was a stumble down memory lane this morning. But, it meant the world to me and made me smile and she included pictures from one of the most gruesome days of her life because I think I look cute in them – so thank you.

2. Me and my friend also went to Costco because nothing says “happy birthday” like an economy size bucket of Tide and a six-pack of dental floss.

3. My new music this week… Oh good lord. I hate to admit that I’ve been listening to Britney’s “Womanizer”. Also picked up “Fearless” by Taylor Swift, “Hare Krisna” by Thievery Corporation, and Amy McDonald’s “Run”. (The last two were free – I love the Tuesday pick from Starbucks – free music – wheeeeee).

4. Season Finale of Project Runway last night. Well, shoot. I don’t even know what to say. I didn’t love the final collections of ANY of the three remaining designers. I liked bits and pieces. It’s not like last year when I was totally in love with Christian’s fierceness. Or when I was on the edge of my seat rooting for Daniel Vosovic. I was… meh. I didn’t care. And actually, though the cohesion would have been shot, if I could have taken bits and pieces of the collections and shoved them together, that would have been the ideal situation for me.

5. It is rumored that my grandfather is getting sent home today. That would be the most awesome birthday present ever.

6. Fun gifts so far – The Princess made me a cool candlestick type thing. It’s cool. She MADE the sucker, so that’s awesome. She also made me a card – and that’s my favorite card yet today. Also loving my iTunes gift card.

7. Going out to dinner tonight. Not sure where, but I just pretty much put my foot down. I am not cooking on my birthday. The kids are going too – so it’ll be chaotic and goofy. Pretty much like life usually is.

8. I only watched about the last 30 minutes of last night’s debate, obviously. It was listen to bickering and back biting or watch Project Runway. I am guessing I didn’t miss much.

9. I learned “Silent Night” in guitar lesson today. It’s easier than “O Holy Night” so I’m thrilled.

10. So, I stopped to get coffee today and the barrista today was this little dude. I’m guessing he was 20ish. He looks super young. He usually works mornings, so I wasn’t surprised to see him. I was surprised to get a bunch of his personal life info when I asked how his day was. But, hey to the guy at Starbucks who is getting allergy testing this afternoon – hope it comes out the way you want it to.

Happy Birthday to me!

I’ll be back later with the Thursday Ten, Birthday Style. I’m off to go have ice cream for lunch though.

Insanely Stupid Birthday Card from My Inlaws

I just went outside to get today’s mail – and there was a birthday card from my mother- and father-in-law. Those of you who have been reading here for awhile know that I don’t like them a whole bunch, and it’s mutual – they pretty much can’t stand me either. That’s why I don’t feel bad about laughing at their card, rather than repeating the “it’s the thought that counts” mantra.

The front of the card says:

A Birthday Quiz:
A woman is heading to her hair appointment when she spots GEORGE and BRAD hitchhiking on the side of the road. She only has room for one…
WHO DOES SHE STOP TO PICK UP?

On the front, there’s a woman behind the wheel of a car, and cartoon guys that are supposed to look like Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

Inside, the card says:
Trick Question.
A woman would never risk missing her hair appointment for ANYTHING!

Stop and digest that for a moment.

ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME? First of all, I’d miss a hair appointment for far lesser things (I nearly missed an appointment once because I couldn’t seem to shut up on a phone call – sitting in the parking lot of the hair salon unable to find a reasonable ending for the call). I am just not that into my hair (and, my sister is a stylist – so I’m fairly sure she would understand and squeeze me in elsewhere should I need to reschedule).

I don’t know why this card annoys me the way it does – but my god, it annoys me. I guess because I’ve never been such a foofy girl that I am that wrapped up in my hair – and that I would be so much concerned with my hair, that I would miss out on an opportunity to squeeze both George and Brad in my car (and the answer is: She finds a way to take them BOTH).
