I Give Up

I have spent the better part of the past few weeks (years?) cleaning up after kids and to be honest, I’m getting to my breaking point. Hubby wrenched his back this morning, walking through The Princess’s room because it is such a mess. And it is – she has three dollhouses and various other toy goodies scattered around her floor.

Not only is her room infested with toys, we have a toy box in the living room as well. By day end, I think I’ve put away every toy the girls own at least two times.

The mess is making me crazy.

One of the biggest advantages of this construction project we’re currently undergoing is that once our new master bedroom suite is completed, our current bedroom will become a playroom for the girls. I can’t even begin to tell you how thrilled I am that all of their toys from all of the rooms will have a home (a pretty good sized one, at that), and I might be able to reclaim the rest of my house.

While I’ve never been a complete neatnik, I have to admit one of the hardest things about raising children and a husband is the mess. Hubby thinks nothing of leaving his breakfast dish on the counter rather than walking two feet to put it in the dishwasher. The Princess and Pumpkin currently think it’s a great deal of fun to take all of their cups, plates and bowls (all plastic, of course) and put them in the middle of the living room and pretend to eat and drink. Yup. Rip-roaring great time for ME. I stepped on a plastic cup this morning, and it cracked, and I thought The Princess was going to cry.

And in less than a week, my kids are going to get showered with toys… and it’s all going to get … worse.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

  1. I know the feeling. Every so often I sneak out a box of toys not played with in months and leave it at the women’s shelter. They never miss it.

  2. Oh honey, you are (as Farmwife says) preachin’ to the choir. While I currently live in a 2500 sq. foot home, when we lived in Alabama, we lived in a 2 bedroom apartment… 5 humans and one dog the size of a small moose!! There were “things” everywhere and no backyard to boot everyone into. Bee actually had her bedroom in our walkin closet. We painted it, hung a border and ta-dah, another bedroom… of course that meant we had to put our closet stuff somewhere else, so that went stuffed into the boys’ already packed closet. Even now with this much bigger home, it’s still messy most of the time. Oddly enough, it’s our bedroom that gets the messiest with toys. Still haven’t figured that out!!

I have a cousin with a little girl who gets all of Bee’s old clothes and toys as soon as she outgrows them. She’s getting a bunch this week to make room for Bee’s Christmas stuff!!

  3. Oh I’m with you on that one. That’s the worst part for me. The mess. The clutter. The cereal bowls and dirty socks and toysToysTOYS everywhere. I try to remind myself that one day I’ll be sitting in an empty house remembering when they were small and wishing I’d just left the dang toys out. So that’s what I try to do.

  4. shoot, my mess is just as bad. i would much rather read to baby bear than clean up my clutter, so there it sits. tonight she was reading an l.l bean catalog. well, engrossed in the pictures. she is not reading yet. so mommy was pointing out the difference between t-shirts and sweaters, jeans and slacks. pathetic, i know. we don’t even catalog shop, but we get the books. s o why not use them as teaching tools/toys the baby can tear apart?

i have a much easier time picking up her mess than my own.

my nieces have a big play room, but they still have toys all over the place. they love playing hide and seek in their 3,500 square foot home that cost them less than our next door neighbor’s 2600 square foot home. home prices are so overinflated around here.
